History

The Society for Nurses in Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery (SNEMIS) is a group of registered nurses specializing in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Units and assisting with Minimally Invasive Surgeries (MIS). These include procedures such as Laparoscopy, Arthroscopy, Gynae-endoscopy, Endourology, Upper GI and Bariatric surgeries, Robotic surgery, and Interventional Radiology, along with other forms of minimally invasive interventions in health facilities across West Africa.

SNEMIS was founded during the 2016 Laparoscopy Surgery Society of Nigeria (LASSON) Conference at the National Hospital in Abuja. At this conference, RPON Johnson Ogundare (from Nigeria), RPON Joel Kpodo (from Ghana), and a group of interested Nigerian registered perioperative nurses collaborated after several consultations with perioperative nurse leaders from Nigeria and Ghana. The Society is dedicated to ensuring safe outcomes by developing standards and competencies through strategic partnerships, as well as training and retraining registered perioperative nurses in Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery in Nigeria. Its goals include promoting safe endoscopy practices, enhancing operating room efficiency, optimizing equipment use, achieving safe surgical outcomes, and supporting Returns on Investment (ROI) within a patient-centered environment.

The Society for Nurses in Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgeries (SNEMIS) – Nigeria aims to support minimally invasive physicians (Gastroenterologists, Interventional Radiologists, Cardiac interventionists) and keyhole surgeons by ensuring prompt and accurate diagnosis, as well as delivering quality and safe perioperative nursing care. This includes assistance in diagnostic and interventional endoscopy, CathLab, and interventional radiology procedures, as well as various minimally invasive surgeries such as laparoscopic general surgery, laparoscopic gynecology, endourology, arthroscopy, ENT procedures, robotic-assisted surgeries, and other forms of MIS in both government and private health facilities in Nigeria. We provide training for registered nurses on the care, maintenance, and repair avoidance of all types of endoscopy and laparoscopy equipment and instruments to ensure optimal patient care and safe outcomes.
